Regardless of our stance, teaching children to read at an early age lays a strong foundation for their future. As a mom and former teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how empowering kids through reading can transform their confidence and abilities. I can attest that most early readers excel better in academics. Early reading not only promotes academic excellence but also instills a lifelong love of learning and exploration.
My own experience of teaching my kids to read early has been incredibly rewarding and has underscored the myriad benefits of early literacy. The awards you see below are part of my son’s collection. Every year he is awarded top student in his class, and in (2024), he was awarded top student at his level, in our country. I attribute his success to his early reading skills. We read to him in the womb every night and continued the custom after birth. As he got older, we transitioned to interactive reading. By age two he read grade 3 level books, and at age 10, he reads as well as a teacher would. Praise God!

The Path of Early Readers
1. Cognitive Development
(A result of empowering kids through reading)
Early reading significantly contributes to cognitive development. Engaging with books from a young age exposes children to a wide range of vocabulary and concepts, stimulating brain development. According to numerous studies, early readers demonstrate higher intelligence quotients, better problem-solving abilities, and advanced memory skills. I wouldn’t be joking if I said my nine-year-old knows things I don’t.
Early reading habits help develop brain connections that improve skills like attention, processing speed, and memory. When children read about different ideas and situations, they learn to understand complex concepts and think critically. These benefits go beyond school and help their overall intellectual growth.
2. Emotional and Social Benefits
(A result of empowering kids through reading)

Reading offers emotional and social benefits to early readers. Stories allow children to explore different emotions and experiences, helping them develop empathy and emotional intelligence. Through books, children learn to navigate various social situations, improving their interpersonal skills and building confidence. These skills are invaluable as they grow and interact with the world around them.
Additionally, the bonding time spent reading with parents and caregivers (which I also highlight later on in the post), nurtures a child’s emotional security. This sense of stability and comfort reinforces their ability to handle stress and adversity. When children see characters facing challenges and overcoming obstacles, they gain insights into resilience and perseverance, which can be applied in their own lives.
Creating a Love for Reading
Fostering Lifelong Learning
One of the most valuable gifts parents can give their children is a love for reading. Our son and daughter were both early readers. By introducing books early on, we were able to ignite a passion for learning in our babies.

Children who enjoy reading are more likely to seek knowledge and engage in intellectual pursuits throughout their lives. This love for reading can also lead to better performance in school and a greater enthusiasm for education.
In a world where information is constantly evolving, fostering a love for reading equips children with the tools to be lifelong learners. They become adept at seeking out information, questioning what they read, and drawing connections between different sources of knowledge. This habit of continuous learning enables them to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing environment.
Early Readers – Enhancing Imagination and Creativity
During the school year I engage students between the ages of five and nine who struggle with reading. They were not early readers and some do not care for reading. My goal is to change that mindset and help them to develop a love for reading. How do I do it? BOOKS. Books open up new worlds for children, allowing their imaginations to soar. Through stories, children can explore different scenarios, cultures, and perspectives, enhancing their creativity. This imaginative play is crucial for cognitive development and fosters problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
Imaginative play sparked by reading can also lead to the development of storytelling skills. Children who read frequently often become proficient at creating their own narratives, which enhances their ability to communicate and express themselves. This creative expression is not only enjoyable but also vital for intellectual and emotional development.
The Rewards of Empowering Kids Through Reading
Early Readers Gain Vocabulary and Language Skills
Introducing books to children at an early age significantly boosts their vocabulary and language skills. Books expose children especially early readers to a variety of words and sentence structures that they might not encounter in everyday conversation. This exposure helps them understand language nuances and improves their ability to express themselves effectively. The benefits of a rich vocabulary are far-reaching, impacting academic success and personal communication.
empowering kids through reading will ENHANCE Focus and Discipline

Reading requires concentration and patience, which can help children develop focus and discipline. As they progress through books, they learn to pay attention to details and follow narratives, which are essential skills for academic success. These skills can also translate to other areas of life, helping children become more disciplined and goal-oriented. The ability to focus and remain disciplined will serve them well in all their future endeavors.
The habit of reading regularly also instills a sense of routine and structure. This routine can be comforting and provide a sense of stability, especially during times of change or uncertainty. Developing focus and discipline through reading lays the groundwork for other productive habits and responsibilities as children grow.
empowering kids through reading will encourage Academic Success
This cannot be stressed enough; children who start reading early often excel in school. This early exposure enhances comprehension and critical thinking skills, laying a strong foundation for academic success. Their advanced reading skills enable them to understand and process information more efficiently, leading to better performance across various subjects.
Additionally, these children are more likely to enjoy learning, which can foster a positive attitude towards education. They are often ahead of their peers, with a deeper understanding of the material and an ability to engage more fully in classroom activities.
The confidence gained from academic success can also have a positive impact on a child’s self-esteem. When children feel competent in their studies, they are more likely to take on challenges and push themselves to achieve higher goals.
empowering kids through reading will Develop Independent Learning Skills

Early readers tend to develop independent learning skills. When doing homework, our son reads the instructions and understands his assignments without needing constant guidance from us. This level of independence boosts his confidence and encourages him to take charge of his education.
Independent learning fosters self-discipline and initiative. Children who can independently access and comprehend information are better equipped to pursue their interests and passions. This autonomy in learning not only benefits their academic journey but also prepares them for lifelong personal and professional growth.
empowering kids through reading will help to reduce screen time
In today’s digital age, children are often glued to screens. While technology has its advantages, excessive screen time can have negative effects on a child’s health and development. Encouraging reading and other screen-free activities can help to balance their daily routine and reduce screen dependency. Reading offers a healthy alternative that promotes mental and emotional well-being.
Books provide a way to unplug from the over-stimulation of screens, allowing children to unwind and relax. The quiet and contemplative nature of reading offers a much-needed respite from the fast-paced digital world. This balance between digital and non-digital activities contributes to a more harmonious and healthy lifestyle.
empowering kids through reading will help to Balance Daily Routines
Books provide a constructive way to spend time, promoting healthy habits. By engaging in reading, children can develop habits that contribute to their overall well-being. For instance, in our home, we have a routine that has helped. I will admit as a parent it is no easy task to get kids to bed, however, when there is a routine, it is so much easier. Reading before bedtime not only improves sleep quality for our kids but also creates calmer nights.
empowering kids through reading can Strengthen Family Bonds
Although we don’t have family reading time as often as we used to, it’s still a special part of our routine. Reading with our son and daughter has always been meaningful, and now seeing our son not only read with his sister but also explain things she may not understand warms my heart every time.
Reading together is a wonderful way to strengthen family bonds. When parents and children share stories, they create lasting memories and foster a deeper connection. These shared moments can reinforce the importance of reading and learning in a child’s life. Early readers appreciate family reading time as it becomes a cherished tradition that brings everyone closer together.

Family reading time also provides an opportunity for parents to model positive reading behaviors. When children see their parents engaging with books, they are more likely to develop a love for reading themselves.
By Empowering Early Readers, We Encourage Interactive Learning
Interactive reading, where parents or teachers ask questions and engage in discussions about the story being read, can enhance a child’s comprehension and critical thinking skills. This practice encourages active learning and helps children develop a deeper understanding of the material. Interactive learning also allows parents to tailor the reading experience to their child’s interests and needs, making it more engaging and educational.
Interactive reading sessions can also foster open communication within the family. Discussions about books can lead to conversations about personal experiences, values, and ideas, enriching the family’s shared understanding and connections.
The Gift to Early Readers is Truly Invaluable.
I sum up with this; by introducing books to children at a young age, we can foster cognitive, emotional, and social development, create a lifelong love for learning, and enhance academic success. Reading also provides a healthy alternative to screen time and strengthens family bonds. The benefits to early readers are profound and far-reaching, and hopefully by sharing this information, other parents will be inspired to give their children the gift of early reading.
